Introduction: Previous authors (1,2) have suggested that the use of navigation during total knee arthroplasty (TKA) can have a role in reducing intraoperative blood loss; two studies (1,2) have shown reduced volume of blood collected in drains when navigation is used, in comparison to traditional methods. Methods: Perioperative blood loss was compared in 136 patients who underwent total knee replacement arthroplasty (TKA). Patients were selected from a prospectively collected database of all those undergoing arthroplasty at the Golden Jubilee National Hospital between July 2005-January 2006. 68 patients had standard instrumentation TKA and 68 patients underwent computer navigated TKA. Both the StrykerVision and Orthopilot navigation systems were used. Mean BMI was 30.8 in the navigated group, 30.74 in the non-navigated group. Mean age was 67.3 years in the navigated group, and 68.4 years in the non-navigated group. There were an equal number of males and females in each group. In the 68 patients who had navigated surgery, the StrykerVision system was used in 36 patients, and the Orthopilot system in 32. We conducted planned comparisons to determine the effect of blood loss between navigated and non-navigated groups, as well as the effect of gender and obesity (BMI <30 vs BMI >30).
