Nigeria has a vision of becoming one of the biggest 20 economies in the world by 2020. A country witha very large army of certificated but unskilled, unemployed and unemployable youths is unlikely tobecome one of the biggest economies of the world soon. Employers of labour complain that theproducts of Nigerian academic institutions are mostly unemployable due to their inadequate creativeand innovative skills. There is high influx of technical workers from neighbouring countries to carry onwith technical services in which Nigerians have proved incapable of satisfactory service delivery.Nigerian Technical and Vocational Education (TVE) institutions whose mandate it is to produce semiskilled,medium level and high level technical personnel do not seem to be producing adequatelyskilled human power in sufficient numbers. TVE is the engine of economic growth in any country. Skilltraining enhances productivity and sustains competitiveness in the economy locally and globally. Inthis documentary study the state of TVE in Nigeria was reviewed. It was shown that the number oftechnical colleges/secondary schools is grossly inadequate. Thus access to secondary technicaleducation is severely constrained. There are no private technical colleges/secondary schools, onlyvery few private polytechnics/monotechnics and no private technical college of education in Nigeria. Itwas also shown that student enrolments in the technical colleges, technical colleges of education andpolytechnics were low due to several factors among which are the unpopularity of TVE type ofeducation and blue collar jobs. TVE needs to be strengthened for Nigeria to develop into a largeeconomy by 2020. It was recommended that there is urgent need to popularize TVE and expandaccess at all levels TVE.
