THE ROLE OF SEMINARIES IN EUROPEAN HIGHER EDUCATION SYSTEM

One of the main goals of the European Higher Education System is the modernization of Higher Education throughout Europe. To get this, the Bologna declaration signed by most European Education Ministers in 1999 proposes some specific actions such as mobility promotion, interuniversity cooperation and improving Higher Education quality by updating style, methods, assessment and contents. Several efforts have been done in the Polytechnic University of Valencia to converge with the Bologna declaration and one of the actions we are developing to get it is the modernization of the concept and contents of seminars. In this paper we present a new idea of what seminaries should be as well as we also show some innovative activities to promote this kind of sessions and to increase efficiency in University learning by using seminaries. In fact, one of the objectives of this kind of sessions is to promote the students' active role at class by means of motivation and practical sessions that allow them to explore and learn by themselves. In order to get this, some educational tools and skills, such as role playing activities, must be developed in these sessions. In addition, social abilities related to Emotional Intelligence such as assertivity and empathy should be improved by both teachers and students to help an appropriate development of seminaries. In the end, students' activity is essential in the learning process and this new concept of seminaries deepens in this idea.
