Decreasing costs combined with miniaturisation of components means that ready availability of UAVs is increasing dramatically. UAV operations are no longer restricted to academia or highly specialised applications. ? The potential for UAV applications is therefore increasing dramatically, but there still remain limitations and challenges that can restrict routine capture of scientific information from UAVs. ? This paper reports on a 1-day workshop which for the first time has brought together specialists from the commercial UAV arena and academic users and researchers to drive a common understanding of requirements and priorities and a view of new and emerging capabilities. ? The workshop also aims to establish, as increasingly disruptive technologies are being introduced, whether greater co-ordination between academia and industry could lead to more effective deployment of air vehicles, instrumentation and sensor systems. ? A series of searching questions have been debated by commercial and academic UAV users to probe our current approaches and perceptions, and to review how we could begin to adopt new approaches given the changing UAV landscape. o Can small UAVs really deliver robust scientific measurements? o Are commercial off the shelf systems of true use? o Can commercial providers add value? o With increasing numbers of UAVs in our skies, can they truly operate without restriction for research purposes? o Where is there common ground for mutual benefit between academia and the commercial world? ? The outcomes of this workshop and debate will be reported into the conference, providing inputs which will be adopted in commercial strategies, and potential previously unrecognised opportunities for academic research.
