摘要

Operation availability is a commonly used index to assess maintenance decision performance. The paper aims to present the essential need of considering the variability of operation availability for the optimal selection of the maintenance strategies among reactive maintenance, age-based maintenance, and condition-based maintenance. It shows that the traditional optimization criterion that only considers the expected operation availability may mislead the decision in selecting an optimal strategy among these maintenance strategies. In contrast, the proposed optimization criteria that consider both the expectation and variability of operation availability can provide a rational choice especially when the equipment lifetime has a large variability.
