A Study of Mediating Relationships on Kaizen Event Teams

Kaizen events are short-term improvement projects, which use cross-functional teams to improve target systems in an accelerated timeframe. Kaizen events appear to be increasingly popular, particularly among companies with a formal Lean program. This paper focuses on tests of mediation models in a field study of 51 Kaizen event teams in six manufacturing organizations. A mediation model is a theoretical causal model in which a process variable is hypothesized to intervene between inputs and outcomes. Mediation models can be useful for understanding the operation of teams and what input variables can facilitate more positive processes and, ultimately, more positive outcomes.
