Nondestructive Evaluation Technologies for Composite Materials

Combinations of two or more materials differing in form or composition are known as composite materials. The use of these materials provides solutions to difficult engineering problems and therefore is used in constructing flaw critical components. Their high cost and high quality requirements make nondestructive evaluation (NDE) technologies necessary when characterizing defects. This paper examines some available nondestructive evaluation technologies that are used to evaluate the surface as well as the subsurface defects in composite materials, including scanning laser technique, infrared imaging technique and one quantitative non destructive technology - combination of shearing speckle and thermographic technique, with some conclusions being made.
