RAINWATER TRACING USING THE STABLE ISOTOPE IN THE WESTERN MEDITERRANEAN (CASE OF RIF CHAIN IN THE NORTH OF MOROCCO)

摘要

Nine meteorological stations, distributed between 3 and 996 m of altitude, havebeen used as basis of an isotopic study of rainwater carried out in the Rif Chain (Northernpart of Morocco) during the hydrological cycles 2004 to 2006. This study allowed us toexamine the isotopic variations during the year and to define the relationship between18 O and 2 H. The altitudinal gradient established for 18 O is: δ = –0.27‰ per 100 m.We have also used the relationship between emergence points altitudes of somestudied springs and their 18 O contents to calculate the regional 18 O gradient. Theselected springs are supposed to have nearest emergence altitudes to the ones of theneighbouring mountains. The 18 O content variation in the springs corresponds to analtitudinal gradient: δ = –0.27‰ per 100 m. It is remarkable to note that this gradient isidentical to that of the rainwater. Even if this isotopic study is reduced in time, it seemsto be sustainable to establish a correct regional meteoric line at least of the slope. Theconstant difference related to the regression (4.25 in groundwater and 4.87 in rainwater)has to be discussed. Before having a demonstrated value, we will use the gradient andthe origin ordinate determined from springs, gradient that takes into account the rainsevaporation before their infiltration.
