CLEAVAGE FRACTURE IN COLD ROLLED STEEL FASTENERS

Acleavage fracture is produced, usually at low temperature, under a condition of high triaxial stress-that is, at the root of the notch-or at a high deformation rate, as for example, by impact loading. The macro-scopic features of fracture surfaces were examined under stereo-microscope, while micro-scopic features were examined at higher magnifications under SEM/EDS. The present investigation is a cleavage fracture, which is one of the brittle fractures occurred in cold rolled steel component, that were typically predominantly transgranular. During the fracture surface evaluation, the cleavage features were observed, which include river patterns, tongues; micro twins and location of cleavage-crack origins. The root cause of the fracture was the cleavage, typically by impact and presented with well defined cleavage facets.
