The power generation industry needs an inexpensive means to understand differences in the evolution of welding residual stress in various high temperature alloys. The stress evolution can be affected by differences in thermal and mechanical properties between different alloys, as well as the presence of phase transformation. The Satoh test can be useful as a quick method to understand these differences. This study compares the evolution of stress for a wide range of high temperature alloys, including low and high alloy ferritic steel, stainless steel, and nickel alloys. Results demonstrate that ferritic alloys undergo phase transformations during cooling that drastically affect the evolution of residual stress. Austenitic alloys do not undergo a phase transformation and thus, accumulate a greater magnitude of residual stress when cooled to room temperature. Further analysis of the evolution of residual stress will be described in this paper.
