CO_2 CORROSION OF STEELS FOR THE OIL GAS PRODUCTION AND TRANSPORTATION

In the pre-salt fields, in Brazil, oil recovery has been increased by re-injecting carbon dioxide extracted from the wells. Deeper oil/gas reservoirs contain large quantities of CO_2 and, therefore, CO_2 corrosion is an up to date issue and as such newer attempts are been made to study the mechanisms of the C02 corrosion. The present work attempt to identify the nature of the scales formed on the surface of a P110 steel (case tube) and an API 5L X80 steel (transportation pipeline) which have different uses in the oil and gas industry, under static conditions at 25°C, 50°C and 75°C and 55 bar CO_2 partial pressure for 7(168h), 15(360h) and 21(504h) days respectively. At 50°C, the corrosion rate is reduced after 15(360h) days, showing a tendency to become constant. For both temperatures 50°C and 75°C, the corrosion rate reduced with increasing time. The scale formed at 50°C and 75°C, identified by XRD, was almost 100% FeCO_3, at 25°C no protective scale was found.
