The worldwide market for automotive powertrains has for many years been tied to a conventional gasoline/diesel engine coupled to either a manual or automatic transmission. These have been developed to a point where efficiency gains (necessary to improve overall vehicle fuel economy) have become ever harder to realize due to the maturity of the product. In 2001, Toyota introduced the Prius I, debuting their "Toyota Hybrid System", a hybrid transmission consisting of a gearbox coupled to two electric motors. This transmission, combined with high power electronics and a high voltage battery, permitted a jump in overall vehicle efficiency. The transmission evolved into the "Hybrid Synergy Drive" in Prius II, and has since found application on a number of SUV and large executive platforms. The Zytek Group of companies have been developing prototype and production electric and hybrid electric vehicles for over 10 years, counting over 12 projects either completed to date or ongoing. An internal review of hybrid technology resulted in a concept design of hybrid transmission, which, if realized, would produce the next jump forward in automotive powertrain efficiency. A grant funding under the UK Government's Ultra Low Carbon Car Challenge permitted this, and has resulted a completely new design of automotive hybrid powertrain that combines high functionality and overall system efficiency with a compact size and low unit cost. The powertrain has been fitted to B/C segment vehicle, and tested using conventional automotive procedures, resulting in an overall fuel economy of 3.21/100km, or 85g/km CO{sub}2. If commercialized, this would represent the most fuel efficient vehicle on sale today.
