Slurry pipelines are critical process elements in many industrial processes, and yet there is a lack of understanding of the effect of process conditions on damage accumulation. Damage can accumulate by erosion, erosion-corrosion, impact, and even scaling. Variability in process conditions makes predictive modeling challenging. This paper outlines process state variables related to damage accumulation in oil sands slurry pipelines, and methods for detecting process upsets and equipment faults. A parametric model is proposed for damage accumulation in slurry pipelines, which can be used for modeling individual damage processes in both experimental studies and in statistical classification of process and reliability upset events.
