A level-2 probabilistic safety assessment (PSA) is an integrated approach to investigate the progression of severe accidents up to containment failure and release of radionuclides into the environment, including an assessment of uncertainties in severe accidents, containment challenges, and radiological releases. The results of a classical level-2 PSA include the frequencies of containment failure modes (release categories) along with the amount of environmental release of radioisotopes (source terms), but not a common "metric" that would readily enable risk-benefit analyses. This necessitates the introduction of a definition of a risk metric and an approach to its quantification within the confines of an extended level-2 PSA, which enables the assessment of the baseline risk and the risk implications of any existing or potentially viable future accident management actions at a given plant. This paper focuses on the approach used to assess the uncertainties in the risk of severe accidents as part of a recently completed level-2 PSA for the 840-MW_e Neckarwestheim Unit 1 nuclear power plant, a 3-loop Siemens-Kraftwerk-Union pressurized water reactor, which entered commercial operation in 1976, demonstrating the risk implications of various accident management measures.
