Heparin is a naturally occurring anticoagulant. Heparin-containing coatings on various medical devices including coronary stents have been well established as effective thromboresistant surfaces. In this study, we characterized a surface-bound heparin coating and investigated its potential to further enhance the thromboresistance of a next generation NEVO~(TM)stent that releases sirolimus from PLGA and sirolimus matrix filled reservoirs that occupy only 25% of the stent surface, while a non-elutable heparin coating covers the remaining bare metal surface.
