Triclosan (TCS) and triclocarban (TCC) are antibacterial agents, commonly used in cosmetics, household goods and personal care products, plastics and textiles. The widespread use of these antibacterial agents has raised concerns about the environmental impacts of their residues. They have been frequently detected in biosolids, aquatic environment and soils. Biosolids are increasingly applied to agricultural land and increase the potential for contamination of the environment via runoff and leaching. Halden et al. reported that TCC seems to defy wastewater treatment after 19 d anaerobic digestion, remaining as high as 51 mg/kg_([kx1]) in the finished sludge. This laboratory investigation was to study the transformation of TCS and TCC in sterilized and non-sterilized soils and biosolids-applied soils under aerobic condition at three different temperatures (20, 30 and 40°C) in two different soils. Metabolites of TCC and TCS transformation were investigated using LC/MS. The extractability of residual TCC and TCS and their metabolites with various solvents was monitored.
