A number of oligodynamic materials including silver (Ag), copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) have been reported for their ability to inactivate microbes at low concentrations. Researchers have reported using these class of materials in applications employing activated carbons and zeolites to purify water. Metal oxides, including copper (II) oxide (CuO), zinc oxide (ZnO) and, particularly, iron oxide (Fe_xO_y) have shown strong antiviral potential, however, exhibit poor antibacterial performance. Since silver is the most robust bactericide among the class of oligodynamic materials, it is presumed the poor bactericidal performance of these materials can be improved by coupling silver with their deployment onto an inorganic substrate.
