Landau-Devonshire theory is used to find ana-lytical expressions for the polarization profile in a ferroelectric film by minimizing the free energy functional for the film. Particular attention is paid to how the profile can be calculated from the boundary conditions, which ultimately requires the solution of transcendental equations. A nu-merical scheme for dealing with this is discussed.
