摘要

This paper addresses the topic of "harmonious architecture", the notion of which is presented by the author in the clash and fusion between the modem and tradition, and between foreign and native culture in the process of globalization.The focus is upon the effective fusion of traditional heritage and the modem influence, and that of foreign and native quintessence in hope to pursue harmony in two senses, namely, harmonious but not identical, and distinct but harmonious.The notion of "harmonious architecture" has long been adhered to in the author's practice in the time-honored city of Xi'an. Such projects have marked the career of the author as the Three Tang Project(Tanghua Hotel, Tang Dynasty Theatre Restaurant and Tang Dynasty Arts Museum), and the planning and design of Tang Paradise, of Shaanxi History Museum, of the Bell Tower and Drum Tower Plaza, of Qunxianzhuang Residential Quarters, and of the Sacrificial Palace of the Mausoleum of Huangdi Emperor. As a result, a host of harmonious architecture has been created well embodying the Chinese culture, the local charm of Xi'an and the contemporary ethos.
