The New Vernacular Houses for Yi Minority in the West Part of China

摘要

There are more than 300 millions people living in the west part of China. Following the pace of urbanization, more and more rural people leave their farmland to towns or cities.Formerly nearly 70% of these rural people rive in vernacular houses, which are in harmony with nature, local climate and which also make good uses of local materials. However these houses still have some disadvantages that aren't fit for modem living style. So they long for a new or modem living style as people who live in cities. Affected by building ways in the cities, many rural people build new houses with simple way of using modem concrete and brick construction,which are regardless of traditional context and seriously which have worse indoor environment than before. What can we do when we are up against the appearance of these monster?On the basis of theoretic study, survey and experimental research methods, the authors try to find the new way towards good indoor environment in accordance with the principles of sustainable design. Some new ecological plan has been proposed and well designed, about 2000 of which have been built and in use now. They are clearly fit for the vernacular context with a certain western flavor. According to the results of both questionnaire and objective tests the writers conclude that the new vernacular houses are superior to the old ones in some ecological index. The work is still going on now, and this paper presents the details by some pictures and charts of principle analysis.
