摘要

Traditional urban design aims to understand and evaluate urban physical environment and carries on the professional practices by the aesthetical, economical and functional dimensions. However, it shows relatively inadequate concern for the regional characteristics and ecological dimension. The author presents the concept of ecological priority in urban design in 1997. Recently, based on the consensus of sustainable development and the great efforts made by the professional scholars, the ecological priority concept had been applied and taken in numerous cases of urban constructions, plannings and designs both at home and abroad. By the caeses studies of the urban designs of Centrial District of University Town in Chongqing City and World EXPO Shanghai 2010, The paper analyses and discusses the urban design technical approaches according to the regional natural elements, such as the bio-climate conditions, morphologies, cultural and historical context etc. The paper makes conclusions as follows, "the form follows cliamte", "design with nature" should be a supplemental guideline for the traditional "form follows function" in urban design and this is also the prerequisite for creating futural harmonized urban human settlement.
