In Search of Harmony: From Dreamscapes to Humanscapes

The essence of the cities is that they have always contained a myriad of diverse and intense connections an activities;where people live, work, shop and play, meeting the needs of economic and social production. Over a period of time the combined actions of economic power and planning have led to the erosion of public spaces and the distinct character of cities. This situation has further worsened with the more recent restructuring of cities, particularly in Asia, under the impact of global capital. In this paper the restructuring of the Chinese city that is happening due to the process of Globalization has been highlighted with attention focusing on large-scale projects that have been initiated to house the global finance industry. It is apparent that in the making of these landscapes the provision of a certain kind of commercial space, of a certain kind of commercial image and a certain kind of commercial return override considerations of the establishment and fostering of communities, neighborhoods, communicative action or social interactions. In these projects we fred the deliberate pursuit of a sanitized urban condition. This is a troubling conclusion for urban design. If such projects are model for how the word should proceed then there is little hope for architecture and urban design, whose role simply is the arrangement of buildings and infrastructure? Urbanism, as a critical activity, finds no role here.It is suggested that urban design should aim at the cultivation of urbanity. This means that it must construct the form, extent and nature of places for collective assembly. Urban design should be nothing than a search for new forms of settlement appropriate to the conditions of today. The bias of the future urban landscapes should be the nurturing the life in city,developing a humanscape. Designing for sustainability is not a concern that the market place is compelled to address. There are few immediate financial rewards in doing so. Therefore, there is a need for urban designers to be discerning about actions we advocate and a need to be more diligent in applying the principles for creating sustainable cities—those in which the embodied energy consumed in building and in running and maintaining designs are, at least low, if not replaceable. Designing with climate in mind rather than in opposition is a necessary component of the effort to reduce energy resources. Much is understood about the differences in designing for tropical, temperate and cold climate cities, but the application of the principles has to compete for attention with aesthetic concerns and the price of land as population swell.
