Reliable Transfer on Wireless Sensor Networks for Structural Monitoring

Structural monitoring—the collection and analysis of structural response to ambient or forced excitation-is an important application of networked embedded sensing with significant commercial potential. The first generation of sensor networks for structural monitoring are likely to be data acquisition systems that collect data at a single node for centralized processing. In this paper, we discuss reliable transfer on wireless sensor network for structural data acquisition. We look at factors affecting reliability, and search for efficient combinations of the possible options. Information redundancy like hybrid of end to end and hop by hop recovery, erasure codes, can be used for reliable data transport. Our experimental results show that each option overcomes different kinds of failures. Erasure code enables very high reliability by tolerating packet losses. Hybrid of end to end and hop by hop recovery achieve 100% reliability when the sending rate is within 1 packet/sec. We show that the fight combination of primitives can yield more than 99% reliability with low overhead, providing a viable alternative to end-to-end retransmission over multiple hops.
