Study on the separation characteristics of chevron liquid-gas separators

Chevron type liquid-gas separators are widely used as one of the most effective instruments to separate mist from the gas. In this study, the separation efficiencies of the horizontal chevron type liquid-gas separators have been characterized experimentally and investigated applying Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) techniques. The effects of droplet sizes at different gas flows on the removal efficiency were investigated using an aerosol particle size analyzer (APS) and a portable aerosol spectrometer. The experimental results showed that the removal efficiency in these instruments is dependent on droplet sizes and gas velocities. The gas phase flow field was determined by the Eulerian method and the droplet flow filed was computed applying the Lagrangian method. The numerical models are evaluated through comparison with experimental data on removal efficiencies.
