The McFarland Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) retrofit demonstrates the unique aspect of introducing advanced wastewater treatment technology into an existing facility. The project demonstrates that it can be cost effective to transform an existing conventional activated sludge treatment plant into a modern Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) facility. The facility is Ohio’s first public works WWTP to utilize the MBR treatment process and the largest retrofit of a conventional treatment facility in North America. In addition to increasing plant capacity without increasing the footprint of the plant, introducing MBR treatment resulted in producing a superior quality effluent compared to conventional techniques. The MBR treatment system requires less overall operation and maintenance cost and has produced at least 30% less residual solids than conventional treatment.
