Developing Link-16 Interoperability for the Royal Australian Air Force, Air Defence Ground Environment Simulator in a Joint and Coalition LVC Environment

Until recently Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Air Combat Officers relied on interaction with live F/A-18s to receive much of their realistic, high fidelity training. Such training was limited and expensive. A virtual environment, training system known as the Air Defence Ground Environment SIMulator (ADGESIM) has been delivered to the RAAF. ADGESIM was rapidly developed and fielded, using a low cost and cost-effective mixture of Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) and customised "thin client" Government-Off-The-Shelf (GOTS) components. ADGESIM is a high-fidelity simulation system - it stimulates the real, operational systems used by the RAAF Air Combat Officers thus eliminating most traditional, trainer concurrency problems. ADGESIM is being developed along with the Concept of the Synthetic Range and the Synthetic Range Interoperability Model that provide a simplified way of understanding how military Live, Virtual and Constructive (LVC) systems can interoperate. Currently ADGESIM complies with two of the three main components of the Synthetic Range Interoperability Model. ADGESIM supports DIS Advanced Distributed Simulation and Radio/Intercom communications interoperability. Link-16 interoperability is being developed for ADGESIM thereby providing full compliance with the three components of the Synthetic Range Interoperability Model. The development of the ADGESIM Link-16, Tactical Data Link component will result in a complete set of Synthetic Range (Interoperability Model) interoperability standards that should be adopted by the Australian Department of Defence. Compliance with such a set of corporate interoperability standards should ensure that acquired systems such as ADGESIM are highly interoperable with other compliant RAAF, Joint and coalition LVC systems. It is recommended that ADGESIM use the SISO-J transport protocol for Link-16 interoperability within the ADGESIM simulation system but also support the SIMPLE and JREAP protocols for external Link-16 interoperability. This paper discusses the Link-16 ADGESIM solution and some of the lessons learned.
