Integrating the Evaluation of Suspension Bridge Parallel-Wire Cable Anchoring Systems with the Proper Rehabilitation Methods
Proper implementation of rehabilitations initiatives for suspension bridge parallel-wire cable strands and anchoring components are imperative considering their non-redundant nature. The failure to provide remedial measures could lead to more costly repairs or, at worst, total bridge failure. The NCHRP Report 534 presents guidelines for the inspection and strength evaluation of suspension bridge parallel-wire cables. Report 534, while primarily focused on the main cable in the suspended spans, also outlines the appropriate inspection techniques for evaluating main cable strands in the anchorages. The focus of this paper is to integrate inspection evaluations based on Report 534 with the suitable rehabilitation method to ensure the most effective allocation of funding. Four case studies are examined to illustrate how each suspension bridge has unique problems with their cable anchoring systems and how each system was systematically addressed. Actions such as minor maintenance to mitigate further degradation and major rehabilitation to strengthen otherwise structurally deficient components were employed based on the varying conditions of the cable strands and anchoring components.
