The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Nondestructive Evaluation (NDE) Center is currently conducting testing to make full-field stress measurements of bridge weld details and of typical bridge defects. Measurements are being made with a thermoelastic stress measurement system in a laboratory environment. Test specimens include defects in compact-tension (CT) specimens, steel light pole supports, and 28-foot long steel girders containing a series of various weld details with defects. Thermoelastic stress measurements are made on specimens subjected to cyclic and random loading. The goal of the testing is to provide a full-field stress measurement of a weld detail or a defect area for the purpose of damage detection and assessment. The paper discusses recent results of testing and describes the capabilities of the system.
