Bridge failures are major problems world wide, with many bridges failing during construction or repair. These failures highlight a need for a low cost system that can (a) forecast failures in time to prevent them (b) reduce the response time and losses if they cannot be prevented and (c) provide better information for forensic analysis similar to aircraft flight recorders. One solution to this problem is the Dynamic Deflection Measurement Equipment (DDME) from Structure Inspection and Monitoring, Inc. This provides a stable reference to measure beam deflection midspan and quantify pier movement real time. Combined with other technology this equipment can be used to quantify general bridge health. This presentation will describe experience to date using this system.
