Corrosion of reinforcing steel is the leading cause of deterioration in concrete bridge decks. Reinforcement corrosion can reduce the service life of the structure and lead to costly repairs. Current bridge inspection practices rely primarily on visual and sounding techniques to detect corrosion. However, these methods are only capable of detecting delaminations resulting from severe corrosion damage. Electrochemical techniques are sometimes used to assess the risk, rate and extent of corrosion damage. The results obtained by the electrochemical methods are sensitive to the temperature, chloride levels and moisture content of the surrounding concrete and can be hard to interpret.
