Aboveground biomass status and management effort of unprotected mangrove forest at the surrounding areas of Rawa Aopa Watumohai National Park, Indonesia

This study aimed to elucidate the aboveground biomass ABG status and management effort for unprotected mangroves at the surrounding areas RAWN Park, Southeast Sulawesi, Indonesia. Results showed that mangrove forest at unprotected areas seems to show unhealthy condition or fragmentation and degradataion due to illegal logging and land conversion for aquaculture. Aboveground biomass ABG (ton ha~(-1)) of R. apiculata at surrounding areas of RAWN Park ranges from 2.17 to 387.13 (average of 139.30). Similarlay, ABG (ton ha~(-1)) of R. mucronata ranges from 16.20 to 505.52 with an average of 189.35. In addition, ABG (ton ha~(-1)) of C. tagal stands ranged from 3.54 to 99.40 with an average of 38.98. These trends realized the spatial variation of ABG for the three mangroves that grown at RAWN Park. Low ABG on several mangrove stands indicated degradation areas due to land conversion and illegal logging, which will have negatively impact on productivity of coastal areas in this region. On the other hand, higher ABG indicated pure stands or undisturbed mangrove areas, which will support the coastal productivity. Therefore, management effort by revegetation of degraded areas must be done for improving the blue carbon stock and productivity unprotected mangroves forest, which is important to sustaine the coastal zone productivity of at RAWN Park.
