Periodontal disease is an infectious and inflamatory process that affects the periodontum including the gingiva, gingival attachment, periodontal ligament, cementum and supporting alveolar bone, and is the major cause of tooth loss in adults. Porphyromonas gingivalis and Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, have been identified as causative agents. Therapy includes oral hygiene education, instrumentation for removal of calculus (scaling), chemotherapy and periodontal surgery. At recent years, the use of natural souces like plant extracts and biomaterials as Chitosan and Pullulan are enjoying great popularity.The aim of this work was the use of biotechnology in the development of a local delivery system for the treatment of periodontal disease evaluating antimicrobial activity of two natural polymers (Chitosan and Pullulan) added with aqueous extracts of T. vulgaris, C. lechleri and J. adstringens Schl. against Porphyromonas gingivalis and Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, the most frequent causative agents of periodontitis.
