To ensure sustainability of mine closure solutions, instrumented field trial cells are often constructed to evaluate different cover systems. Soil moisture is a key piece of information for evaluating the hydrologic performance of field trials. There are a number of different types of soil moisture sensor available for field measurement. This paper investigated the performance of one of the most common types of soil moisture sensor used in different soils, from sandy soil to clay. Results have shown that various performances are expected when applying the sensor in different soil types; and it is often necessary to calibrate the sensor according to the specific soil type if accurate measurements are required.
