A 1987 report of the United Nations World Commission on Environment and Development (also known as the Brundtland Report) defines "sustainability" as "meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. Sustainable enterprises consider their stakeholders (employees, neighbors, suppliers, and customers), not just their shareholders. They substitute long-term thinking for short-term thinking, focusing on people, planet and profit (the "Three Ps"). This paper focuses on the key elements of a sustainability program as they apply to pressure sensitive tape manufacturing companies. Emphasis is placed on the breadth and depth of a comprehensive program. While the environment is one key element of a complete program, it is not the only element, as demonstrated herein.
