Arsenic (As) is a non-essential toxic element that is released into natural environment from both natural and anthropogenic sources and causes toxicity to plants,humans and animals (Mahimairaja et al., 2005; Naidu & Bhattacharya, 2009). As-contaminated groundwater is a serious problem in Bangladesh and parts of West Bengal in India and affects millions of humans (Naidu & Bhattacharya, 2009).The presence of As in soil induces toxicity in plants leading to reduction in plant growth and crop yield. Arsenic toxicity varies in the soil and depends upon the available form in soil (Naidu & Bhattacharya, 2009). There exists a great variability among plants for their As-resistance/ As-tolerance (Meharg, 2003; Singh et al., 2007). Most of the studies investigating As toxicity have focused upon the effect of As on the oxidative damage during seedling development. However, not much is known about the effect of As on protein and sugar metabolism during early germination process and radicle emergence. With this background, the present study investigated the impact of As exposure on changes in protein and sugar metabolism during early 24-48 h of germination process in mung bean ( Vigna radiatd). We selected mung bean as a target plant species since it was found to be a non-accumulator and sensitive to As (Singh et al., 2007).
