Estimation of spall size in bearing inner race based on vibration analysis

Rolling element bearings are widely used in rotating machines. A faulty bearing can cause a total system failure, resulting in economic loss and even human injuries. Therefore, preventing bearing failure is a subject of high importance. The diagnosis of a fault existence is usually not sufficient to decide if maintenance operation is required. Hence, it is necessary to estimate the severity of the defect. For bearings, a common failure mechanism is spalling in the raceways. The objective of this study was to estimate the spall width located on the bearing inner race by analysis of its vibration signature. This study broadens recent studies on spalls located on the bearing outer race. The problem of estimating the fault size in the inner race when the other race is fixed was studied and an algorithm was proposed. Experimental results were used to validate this algorithm.
