Arctic and sub-arctic regions of Russia have large gas reservoirs. Natural gas extracted from these regions may be exported to other destinations through a ship-borne transportation system. In this case, one of key issues at conceptual design phase is the integrity and safety of LNG cargo containment systems (LNG CCS) under repeated ice impact. The impact by small ice floes in ice-infested areas may be frequently encountered in normal seagoing condition. Thereby the repeated impact may be considered to be an operational load, which can be defined based on classification societies' ice class rules. The view points of the safety evaluation up to now have been limited to structural hull deformations by the collision. However, the effects of vibratory acceleration induced by the impact on LNG CCS have not been examined. In the present study, numerical simulations are performed for a 150K class Mark III type LNG carrier to investigate dynamic responses of LNG CCS under impact-induced vibratory acceleration. Then the collision experiments to emulate computational simulations are carried out to verify simulation results and the integrity of LNG CCS under the repeated impact between small ice floes and ship.
