Offshore wind turbines require a high performance coatings and materials. On-land technology can not directly be used offshore due to the very demanding conditions. Highly corrosive environment and high maintenance costs imply new challenges in order to choose the right materials and coatings. Since there is a need to improve the lifetime of components from currently 10 years to up to 20 years, development of new technologies will be required. Materials and coatings together with new lab-scale tests that can simulate real offshore conditions will also be required. This paper offers a review of some coating systems and technologies that may be applied in high demanding conditions and that may therefore be suitable for offshore wind turbines.
