From all indications cyber attacks are on the increase both in their frequency and in the types of attacks we will continue to see in the future. Cyber criminals are also becoming more imaginative-an example here is the Crypto-Locker virus released in September of 2013. The Crypto-Locker virus infects a Windows-based computer by encrypting a large group of data files and then extorting money from the computer user for the decryption key. By December of 2013 the distributor of Crypto-Locker had reportedly extorted an estimated several hundred million dollars (USD) in payments from victims.
