Selective use of stainless steel reinforcement is a corrosion-resistant solution for reinforcing structures exposed to chloride-containing environments. The alkaline environment increases the corrosion resistance compared to neutral environments which makes the leaner designations, such as 304, 316 LDX 2101? (UNS S32101) and 2304 (UNS S32304), interesting alternatives in environments where chlorides will penetrate the concrete structure. To further refine the use of stainless steel rebar and enable selection of different stainless steel designations, it is necessary to determine their maximum chloride tolerance: the critical chloride threshold level (CCTL).
