A Redescription of the Montanoceratops cerorhynchus Holotype with a Review of Referred Material

THE BASAL NEOCERATOPSIAN Montanoceratops cerorhynchus has historically been interpreted as a close relative of Ceratopsidae by some authors, based on several shared synapomorphies such as the presence of a nasal horn and a reduced laterotemporal fenestra. Only fragments of the skull were recovered with the holotype specimen, however, and were embedded in a plaster reconstruction that hindered detailed examination of these bones. Dismantling of this cranial reconstruction has led to reidentification of some skull parts, especially those purportedly exhibiting ceratopsid traits. The nasal horn is here re-identified as a jugal horn, and several previously undescribed or unrecognized cranial elements, such as a premaxilla, are also figured and described here. The preserved cranial parts exhibit a suite of derived characters shared with other members of Leptoceratopsidae, and phylogenetic analysis posits Montanoceratops cerorhynchus as a leptoceratopsid more derived than Cerasinops, and sister to a more exclusive lade of leptoceratopsids with highly curved mandibles. A review of specimens referred to Montanoceratops over the last decade finds weak support for assignment to the genus for two of the specimens ( MOR 542; AMNH 5244), but not in the case of a third specimen (RTMP 88.11.1). Recent discoveries indicate that leptoceratopsid diversity in CampanianMaastrichtian rocks of western North America approaches that observed in centrosaurine ceratopsians of equivalent age and geographic distributions, and the former view of these animals as a relict holdover from older faunas can no longer be supported.
