An Approach for Assessing Students' Performance in Software Engineering Capstone Projects

Capstone courses/projects are regarded as a useful and even essential component in engineering education for preparing students with capability in using knowledge to solve engineering problems. In software engineering discipline, the process and teamwork skill are more of a focus in a capstone course, compared with the final system developed. It is important, from the education point of view, to have effective approaches on assessing individual student performance in a team while still encouraging collaborations. This paper presents such an assessment approach for teamwork performance in software engineering education and a use of the approach in a capstone course. A novel feature of the approach is that it encourages and supports student active and collaborative learning. Another feature is that it can be tailored to different requirements and software engineering courses. The result of the use of the approach in the capstone course is positive and promising.
