Mine Water Management on a Floodplain - A Case Study

This paper describes the issues and challenges associated with the formulation of a practical, cost effective, but ultimately effective water management strategy for a mine site situated on the floodplain of a large river system in central Queensland, Australia. The Curragh North coal mine is located on an alluvial floodplain of the Mackenzie River, in central Queensland, Australia. The catchment area at the mine site is 50,000 km~2 and the site had been inundated by flood waters during previous flood events. Until recently, development of the site had not proceeded, due to the inherent difficulties involved in overcoming the risks associated with flood protection, management of off site environmental impacts, provision of a sustainable water supply and management of mine water runoff. Using innovative design and construction techniques, we were able to provide the mine owners (Wesfarmers) with the two key elements critical to the mine's viability, namely a sustainable water supply to satisfy the mine's operational demands and a cost effective flood protection strategy for protection of the mine's infrastructure. We adopted a holistic design approach to address and answer the following key project challenges: ?daily water balance modelling of the mine water management system to maximise on-site water harvesting.
