Functionally graded four layer YSZ/La_2Zr_2O_7 composite coatings composed of CoNiCrAlY bond coat were prepared over SS304 substrates by using gas tunnel type plasma spraying torch at optimum spraying conditions. The experiment was performed to evaluate the hot corrosion behavior of graded coatings in 60 wt.%Na_2SO_4 + 40 wt.%V_2O_5 molten salt environment at 1000°C. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy techniques were used to determine the nature of phases formed and to carry out microanalysis of the hot corroded coatings respectively. Results indicated that LaVO_4 and YVO_4 are the main corrosive products along with the ZrO_2 phase transformation from tetragonal to monoclinic phases in La_2Zr_2O_7 and YSZ coating layers respectively. Formation and penetration of molten NaVO_3 across the graded coating microstructure produces different kinds of corrosive products in different microstructures with respect to the presence of La_2O_3 and Y_2O_3 content. After 60 h in hot environment, the graded top layers completely peel from the bond coat surface, which limit the hot corrosion resistance ability of the functionally graded coatings.
