Effect of powder structure on optical performance of vacuum cold sprayed TiN coatings

Titanium nitrides (TiN) coatings on Al_2O_3 substrates were fabricated with ball milled micro-sized powders by vacuum cold spray (VCS) process at room temperature. The microstructure and crystal structure of the VCS TiN coatings and were examined by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. Sheet resistance of the VCS TiN coatings was estimated with a four-point probe method. The optical performances of the coatings were tested by UV-visible and near infrared spectrophotometers equipped with integrating spheres. The effects of nozzle traverse speed on the microstructure, optical properties and electrical properties of the coatings were investigated. It was found that the lowest average sheet resistance of the TiN coating deposited with the micro-sized powders is 16.9 Ω. And the optical reflectance of the coating increased with increasing the wave length in the near-infrared band (up to 2300nm) with a maximum reflectance of 22.5%.
