Effect of Grinding Media Type on Ball Mill Capacity

In recent years, the use of high-chromium cast grinding media has been promoted as an alternative for use in conventional grinding applications with the argument of an improvement in the recovery of minerals in the flotation process, however as at this point in time the concept has not been demonstrated conclusively. During investigations into the use of high chromium cast grinding media, a fundamental aspect, which is the effect of the grinding media density on ball mill throughput has been neglected. If we consider the very well demonstrated concept: That the milling process is based on the amount of energy generated to obtain a given product (P80), and the energy demand is directly related to the mill speed and ball charge weight, with the latter dependent on the bulk density of the load. Then it is valid to argue that the mill power draw primarily depends on the grinding media density.In recent years, the Moly-Cop group has carried out several laboratory evaluations of the effect of different grinding media types, these tests have demonstrated that high-chromium cast grinding media generates up to 4 % less power than the forged grinding media under the same conditions.Recently, a copper concentrator undertook an industrial evaluation trial using high chromium cast media. After 4 months of evaluation they verified that the power generation was as much as 5 % less in comparison to the same sized forged media. The most significant result was an average throughput reduction of 6 % during the testing period. In addition to the decreased power observed during the testing period, a coarser ball mill discharge product was also identified as well as no observed improvement in recovery due to the use of high chromium cast grinding media.
