The wear behaviors of combinations comprised of an ( α+β)-type titanium alloy, Ti-6Al-4V ELI (Ti64) and a β-type titanium alloy, Ti-29Nb-13Ta-4.6Zr (TNTZ) in Ringer's solution and air were investigated using a ball-on-disc type configuration for biomedical applications. The volume loss of discs and balls made of TNTZ tends to be larger than that of Ti64, regardless of the mating alloys. Further, the volume loss of TNTZ disc/TNTZ ball combination exhibits the maximum value among all of the combinations both in Ringer's solution and air. In addition, although volume loss of the metallic materials sometimes increases in air compared to Ringer's solution, the volume loss in Ringer's solution increases for TNTZ disc/TNTZ ball combination compared to that in air. According to the observation and analysis of worn surfaces of discs and ball and those of debris generated during the frictional wear tests, delamination wear is predominant in TNTZ disc/TNTZ ball combination. On the other hand, the predominately abrasive wear occurs in Ti64 disc/Ti64 ball combination. It is considered that the different trends of volume losses between these combinations in Ringer's solution and air is related to the difference in wear modes depending on the type of alloys.
