Gaussian Beam Diffraction by the Inverse Prism

We study the diffraction of a Gaussian beam from the recently introduced inverse prism, which is a medium that is instantaneously switched between an isotropic state and a uniaxial state. The study is done by expanding all the fields in terms of their angular spectra, using previously derived temporal Fresnel coefficients for the s- and p-polarizations. It is found that the envelope of the beam strongly varies over time, as a result of the different velocities of the angular spectrum components induced by the production of new frequencies at the time discontinuity. This spatiotemporal diffraction effect, requiring both temporal discontinuity and spatial dispersion, is very unusual, and is reported here for the first time to authors' knowledge.
