This paper describes the development, assembly and testing of the "Next Generation Urban Unmanned Air System". The primary focus of this effort is to develop an Urban Unmanned Air System (UAS) that would be safely operable of a controlled flight in urban settlements with the obstructions-electromagnetic and atmospheric (turbulence and wind shear); and provide with a persistent Intelligence and Strategic Reconnaissance. The components of the UAS are developed based on the required performance parameters and also some key design aspects that are also unique selling points of the UAS. The key design aspects viz. Supportability, Affordability and Portability were always the guiding principles for system design and are reflected in designing each individual module of the vehicle; ranging from the airframe assembly, to avionics integration and then down to operation and maintenance. The paper also talks about the team's learning experience, and how it could be managed to overcome the difficulties that the team faced while transforming the design from the drawing board in conceptual stage into the actual flying prototype towards the end. The UAS has already been prototyped and the design has been validated by a committee of experts from Lockheed Martin, University authorities and reputed government organization. Currently, more flight tests are being planned in imminent future to further improve the system capabilities by upgrading the design.
