To overcome the less load-carrying capacity of under-matched butt joint, a new design criteria of weld shape in butt joint was put into forward based on the realization conditions of equal load-carrying capacity (ELCC) for under-matched weld joints and according design principle and parameters of ELCC joint were also proposed. And an example designed by this method was given as well. The effects of weld shape parameters on stress concentration in welding joint were discussed in this paper. And the proposed method was verified through experimental study and the results show that the static tension strength of ELCC under-matched joint can reach the one of the base metal, and the fatigue strength is much higher than the one of the as-welded equal-matched butt joint.
